Summer’s Cheerleader

"But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee: who knoweth not in all these that the hand of the LORD hath wrought this? In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind." Job 12:7, 9-10

Long before dawn breaks,

After twilight falls–

Every day, he flutes his song

Clear, without mistakes.

CHEER UP CHEERILY! CHEER UP CHEERILY!

 On that throne of pine,

He is swinging free.

While I bustle through my day,

He repeats his line.

CHEER UP CHEERILY! CHEER UP CHEERILY!

To his hiding mate,

Here he serenades;

Even I can sense the love—

Together we will wait.

CHEER UP CHEERILY! CHEER UP CHEERILY!

One day all is still.

Yet I understand;

He is a provider now—

Tiny beaks to fill.

Sometimes he returns

Once his charges sleep

To release his jubilance

While our bonfire burns.

CHEER UP CHEERILY! CHEER UP CHEERILY!

Soon his fledglings, too,

Shall reprise the strain.

I have learned to join right in,

Whistling on his cue.

CHEER UP CHEERILY! CHEER UP CHEERILY!

Summer slips away;

He knows that. We know

Any song might be our last,

So we’ll sing today.

CHEER UP CHEERILY! CHEER UP CHEERILY!

Now he disappeared

With his lovely tribe;

But he taught his song to me,

So I still am cheered.

I won’t sing alone.

I will share the love.

I will spread God’s cheer till all

‘Cross the land have known.

Then while snow resigns,

I will watch and wait

Till my cheery friend returns,

Singing, to his pine.

CHEER UP CHEERILY! CHEER UP CHEERILY!

“Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD!” Psalm 150:6
