Quite Queer

Clusters of lavender, sweetest aroma!

Blooming by roadsides, arranged in a vase,

Clutched in my hand, they’re the loveliest lilacs—

And how the fragrance sweeps over my face!

Gleaming with pride that’s as yellow as sunshine,

Strong-willed and tow’ring high over my lawns

With sticky stems and the sneakiest root-spread,

White-headed dandelions wave their batons.

Dazzling in armor-like jewels of radiance,

Flitting, then hovering, whizzing away,

Dangling in mid-air, the hummingbird dances,

Flaunting its ruby and emerald display.

Stark against snowdrifts, the king of the prairies

Flutters and hops with unearthly-like crows.

Squawking at every quiver of feather,

Raven–the robber–his arrogance shows.

Why do the minds of most prejudiced humans

Venerate one thing, but toss out the next;

Deem connotations to hold up assumptions,

Shrugging when world issues grow more complex?

If granted words, birds and blossoms should cry out,

“Preconceived judgments will never define!

God’s Truth stands valid and He loves all races,

Kings, orphans, infidels, righteous, refined.”

Then amongst themselves, from raven to hummingbird, from lilac to dandelion, they whisper,

“To assume some things to be naturally good

And others as nothing but bad

Would be quite queer, don’t you think?”

-Rynelle Penner

(One of those poems I finally finished after two years. Writing is hard work. Thoughts come and go. Inspiration ebbs and flows at its own will. And occasionally, here and there, a piece is produced–never perfect, but always an attempt to connect. To connect the inner with the outer. To connect truth with life, experiences with lessons. To connect people. To connect the writer with God. And if any of that happens, the writer wipes the sweat from her face and celebrates.)

And then, because I’m trying to savour every moment of summer, I’ll just share a few collages of nature photos I’ve taken (just with my phone camera) since April. According to the amount of photos I have in my gallery, these must be my favorite parts of creation. 😉 First of all–PLANTS.

SWEET
BRILLIANCE
SUNSHINE
VIVACIOUS
ELEGANCE

And secondly….SKIES!

TRANQUILITY
FREEDOM

So there you go. Let God speak to you through nature. Stop, look, listen, and smell. You will find Him. A simple rock can teach a deep lesson. So can the arrogant raven and naughty dandelion. Both are actually beautiful.

  1. Love this! Both the poem and the thoughts that follow it reflect the deep thought that went into them . . . well done!
